VS Code

Run 9p inside your editor.

The 9th Protocol extension gives you two ways to work in VS Code.

Commands

Command	What it does
9th Protocol: Open Agent Panel	Chat panel docked in the editor
9th Protocol: Open Session in Browser	Full session in a browser tab

Both run against the same engine and the same ~/.9p configuration as the CLI - memory, skills, and MCP servers all apply.

Panel

A side panel with the conversation, tool activity, inline permission prompts, and the session meter. Good for staying in one window.

Browser session

Opens the local session server (see 9p serve) in a browser tab. More screen space than a panel, and useful when you want the agent working while the editor is doing something else.

Setup

The extension uses whatever credentials the CLI has, so:

9p login

is all the auth you need. See Authentication for BYOK and environment variables.

During private beta the extension is installed from a .vsix rather than the marketplace. Marketplace publishing lands with general availability.

Working directory

The extension uses the first workspace folder as the agent’s working directory. In a multi-root workspace, open the folder you want the agent to work in as the primary root.
